Adventure Based Learning Groups

Te Pia

A Kaupapa Māori Adventure Therapy Programme that provides an opportunity for rangatahi to learn more about themselves, connect with others, and develop an understanding of their place in the world. 
 

Te Pia is built around the four key values of the circle of courage: 
 

    Whānau 

  • Foster stronger connections to their culture by learning about their whakapapa 

    Pukengatanga 

  • Build resilience through personal growth 

    Mana Motuhake 

  • Develop strategies to look after themselves and others through whakawhānaungatanga 

   Atawhai 

  • Learn to contribute in meaningful ways in new environments 

 

These programmes run between 6-7 weeks during the school term within school hours. It includes outdoor elements such as, bush craft, orienteering and hiking and fishing. 

Te Māhuri :
 

Purapura Whetu is working in partnership with Adventure Specialties Trust to support tangata whaiora to flourish through exploration of the natural environment.

Te Māhuri provides an opportunity for tangata to experience the outdoors. During this programme tangata whaiora will be supported to develop connections within themselves and their peers in a whānau environment. Te Mahuri is a programme built to help support 13-16-year-olds.

 

Te Māhuri is built around seven key values that were created in collaboration with Purapura Whetu and Ngāi Tahu in 2019. These values guide both those leading and participating in Te Māhuri. 
 

  • Whānau Ora

  • Te Pūtake 

  • Te Ao Māori 

  • Ngāi Tahutanga 

  • Te Ao Tūroa 

  • Mahinga Kai 

 

Activities include the following:
 

  • Bush walks

  • Surfing

  • Coasteering

  • High Ropes

  • Rock Climbing

  • Indoor Rock Climbing

  • Mountain Biking

  • River Crossings

  • Sit on top Kayaking

  • Sea Kayaking

Te Waonui (17+ y/o):

Purapura Whetu is working in partnership with Adventure Specialties Trust to support tangata whaiora to flourish through exploration of the natural environment.
 

This Kaupapa also encompasses a Te Ao Māori worldview, where tangata whaiora learn tools to engage and interact in a social environment and learn about the whakapapa of the whenua here in Ōtautahi. There are opportunities for tangata whairoa to kōrero about various topics and learn grounding/anchoring techniques for anxiety, anger, overwhelming feelings etc.

 

Te Waonui framework and themes is built around Purapura Whetu’s Ngā Pou E Ono from the Whaia te iti kahurangi assessment. These guide both those leading and participating in Te Waonui.
